Advent is traditionally a time of preparation for Christmas – remembering the words of the prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures who express our yearning for deliverance; reading the narratives in the Christian Scriptures that anticipate the birth of Jesus; acknowledging our longing for the fulfilment of God’s promises in the return of Christ at the end of time, and; marking the dawning of God’s light in our darkening days.
Sadly, however, those themes of faith are easily displaced in our daily lives by the relentless drive of Christmas itself. None of that busy-ness and anxiety points to the promise of Christmas.
At Advent, we want to acknowledge our deep longing for peace in our lives, for a calm and confidence that comes from communion with God.
Therefore this Advent season we invite you to join us into a time of preparation marked by slowing down, taking time for silence, and creating a space where we can connect with God. It’s not because the celebration of Christmas doesn’t matter. It’s just that being still and attentive to God creates the space in us where the gift of Christmas can be born.
First Sunday of Advent is November 27, 2016
Christmas is Coming…and the following are on the radar:
St Paul’s Annual Adopt-a-Family
Mary Gauld and I (Jane Howard) are taking on the task of organizing the Christmas Adopt a Family program through St. Matthews House this year. To all of you have supported the program in the past, thank you!!
Last year we were able to provide support for 15 children and 6 adults in 5 families. In order to provide the same level of support this year, with the addition of 4 seniors, we need to raise a minimum of $1,500. If you can help us to reach that goal, it would be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be made through the church for this cause (mark clearly on your envelope that it’s for
St. Matthews Christmas Hampers). Some specially marked envelopes are available on the Narthex table.
Please let us know if you are interested by November 18. We hope to have the wish list from St. Matthews House before the end of November. If you are interested in shopping for that would be greatly appreciated. Speak to one of us and we’ll make sure we connect with you when we have the wish list for our families. If you just want to donate money and leave the shopping to us, that’s fine too.
More updates to follow as we know more.
Thanks so much.
Jane and Mary
